think the wellspring of creativity is dysfunction - dismay, disorder,
disarray, disruption. When life is not going the way we want it
to, when our dreams or expectations have been jilted, then we reflect
and regroup and allow fantasy to rearrange the harsh reality. But
the irony of the creative state of mind is that this condition is
not at all conducive to production, which involves order and schedule;
editing and compromise. So there's got to be a driving desire, as
well as a discipline (a nip-and-tuck, give-and-take) to take depression
or dilemma and turn it into a work of art or a solution. I believe
that any work of art or "creative" solution comes from
discipline applied to dysfunction."

"Fifth World, my fantasy e-book about global warming, has been a long time in the making. A friend told me about the Native American creation myth of the Five Worlds of the Anasazi, and I noticed how similar they were to the Four Worlds of Jewish Kabbalah and the Seven Chakras of Kundalini yoga. My friend later took me to visit the ruins at Bandelier, and as I sat on the mountainside meditating, I had a vision of the old shaman warning me about global warming. After that, I went home and began writing the story. Some [friends] helped me with editing comments and artistic or technical advice; others simply provided good companionship that empowered me to keep working at it long after the original inspiration had cooled.
