Open Your Mind and say “Aha!”

Celebrate International Creativity and Innovation Day, 2008!

(Chapel Hill, NC – April 13, 2008)  On April 21, Triangle citizens will join people of all ages in 106 communities around the world to celebrate Creativity and Innovation Day, a time to appreciate our innate abilities to imagine and implement new ideas at home, at work, in the studio, and in the world at large.   It's a day to remember that, like athletes preparing for a marathon, or musicians improving their technique, we can all develop our creative abilities with practice.

Why This Celebration?

This holiday, the brainchild of Marci Segal, a Canadian creativity expert and author, is now in its eighth year, and support has been growing exponentially.   "This is the first year that the Triangle area is involved in the celebration, and we are expecting many people to participate," says Jeanne Hillson, creativity consultant and local promoter of the day.
"The Triangle is an area teeming with creative people who apply their imaginations in the medical, academic, artistic, business, and technology fields every day.   On April 21, we are encouraging everyone, especially those who may not think of themselves as "creative," to take time to appreciate and use the power of creativity in their lives.

Learning from Athletes: Practice, Practice, Practice!

Just as marathon runners develop their stamina and ability gradually over time, with repeated exercise, we can develop our creativity in the same way.   "Research shows that creativity is not a rare gift of a talented few, but rather, a function of certain attitudes and abilities that can be developed with practice," says Hillson.  "Solving a puzzle, adapting a recipe, organizing an event, are all creative acts.   Each represents a shift from ordinary perspective and combines known elements in unusual and useful ways.   It's a skill we're all born with, and one that can definitely be developed with practice."  In this world of rapid change, increasing our creativity, our ability to generate options and alternatives, has big payoffs in overcoming obstacles at home, at work, and in the community.

Ways to Build Your Creativity

There are many ways to exercise your imagination, practice shifting your perspective, and develop the skills and attitudes of creativity.     For starters, here are two things you can do on April 21 and beyond to exercise your creative muscles:

Look for many "right answers"
As Linus Pauling said, "The best way to have a good idea is to have lots of ideas." Thinking of alternate uses for common objects is a standard creativity exercise that really works to help you build mental flexibility. While stuck in traffic, try to come up with ten alternate uses for your coffee cup. Or while waiting in the supermarket checkout line, imagine ways to use that tabloid newspaper staring at you. You'll be training your mind to think divergently, to go beyond your first idea. “That's good practice for solving challenges in real life,” says Hillson.  “And, besides, it’s great fun—especially if you get others around you involved in the game."

Deliberately break a pattern, and try something new
Just as traveling to a different city refreshes your perspective, so will a new experience at home. For example:

•  Try a new recipe, a new cuisine, a new restaurant.

•  Drive a different route to work.

•  Visit a new museum, or read a book on a new topic.

•  Volunteer at a shelter or a food kitchen or nursing home.

Many other tips are posted here. To see ideas from past and current celebrations all over the world, visit the International Creativity and Innovation Day website, www.creativityday.org.
